Christmas Lights Switch On

Organisers of Harleston’s Christmas lights switch-on are putting the finishing touches to their big day on Saturday 1 December. Ben Langley, comedian, writer and performer, best known as a finalist in Britain’s Got Talent 2018, and shortly starring as Wishee Washee in Aladdin at Norwich Theatre Royal, will officially switch on the lights on the Christmas tree and around town at 18.20. On stage to help him will be Beth Goodswen of JD Young in Harleston, who have sponsored this year’s Christmas tree.

The event, which is jointly organised by Harleston’s Future and Redenhall with Harleston Town Council, is a highlight in the local calendar, attracting several thousand people from the town and surrounding villages.

From 9.30 onwards there will be a Christmas Market with 30 stalls selling fruit liqueurs and preserves, cakes, pies, bread and pastries, locally reared meats, cider and apple juice, wreaths and plants, handmade craft items, and jewellery. Woodbine Alpaca Farm will also bring a couple of their alpacas as well as products. A wide range of hot drinks and street food will be available as well as seasonal songs from Too Many Cooks singing group. Father Christmas will be welcoming young visitors to Santa’s Grotto at Harleston Information Plus during the afternoon.

From 14:00 to 14:30 there will be quiet time for children with special needs and access requirements, and then it will run through till 17:00.

Over at St John’s Church there will be a Christmas Fayre from 10:00 to 16:00.

From 16:00 The Thoroughfare will be closed to traffic but many shops will stay open late as families come to enjoy children’s rides and other entertainments. There will be an inflatable Snow Globe, ideal for family photos as well as letting off steam, traditional street organ, fire-juggling performance from The Thundermentals and The Grinch will be trying to spread mayhem.

From 17:30 players from the East of England Cooperative Society Brass Band will playlots of familiar and seasonal tunes.The event has been supported by East of England Co-op and local businesses Daisy & Co and Harleston Bathroom & Tile Cente.
