SUMMARY:Flag Display – UN World Peace Day
DESCRIPTION:Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September.\nThe UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire.\nIn 1981, the United Nations General Assembly declared the third Tuesday of September as International Day of Peace. This day coincided with the opening day of the annual sessions of the General Assembly. The purpose of the day was and still remains, to strengthen the ideals of peace around the world.\nTwo decades after establishing this day of observance, in 2001, the assembly moved the date to be observed annually on September 21. So, beginning in 2002, September 21 marks not only a time to discuss how to promote and maintain peace among all peoples but also a 24-hour period of global ceasefire and non-violence for groups in active combat.\nObserve the global ‘Minute of Silence’ – In 1984, the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Pathways to Peace inaugurated the Minute of Silence. At noon in each time zone, this observance of silence creates a ‘Peace Wave’ around the world. Individuals, organizations, communities, and nations are invited to participate in this shared and practical act of peace-building.\nThere will be a display of flags in the town centre to celebrate United Nations Peace Day.\nThe Flag Force team within Harleston’s Future runs an annual programme of flag displays in the town centre. Making use of the holders for the Christmas trees above shops along the main streets, these provide a continual use for an otherwise once a year display. The programme has been so successful it has encouraged other towns to follow the lead. Come and see the original and largest annual display of flags. You could even try and visit Harleston and see each flag display during the whole year. Great fun for children of all ages.\n\n\n\nTeam Harleston\nWorking Together\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n
